Its been awhile also def not 2025 but better late than never here are my Top Movies for 2025
Sinners
Favourite movie of the year, slightly annoyed a did not see it in IMAX but oh well. Its just a very clean tight package with good characters, good action and set pieces. Some amazing music and some interesting ideas and themes to tie it all together. A really cool take on the vampire movie and for those people not into horror movies, this ain’t too bad fairly tame for the most part and worth a go.
Superman
I guess our first proper DCU movie though that’s what happens with sort reboots. Anyway I really liked superman. I didn’t think Zack Snyder’s stuff was unwatchable but Supermans characterization was a bit weird in the DCEU to the point where I tended to view Steve Rodger’s Captain America from the MCU as what I view Superman should be. Anyway we are finally here Superman acting as Superman, altruistic, kind, Ernest, kinda corny but it’s a good way. The movie is solid not much to complain about aside from it also having to build the rest of the DCU but that’s super hero movies for the most part these days.
Wake Up Dead Man
The third instalment in the Knives out series and while I really liked Glass Onion, Wake Up Dead Man is a lot better and nearly as good as the original Knives Out. Its knives out so you expect an amazing cast, an interesting setting and mystery. Wake up Dead Man Delivers and id specifically shout out Josh O’Connor as Jud, just a really good performance by that guy. Also as someone who grew up Catholic I had a level of familiarity with a lot of the Church stuff so yeah I think that made it a better experience. Obviously it’s still a good movie without knowing much about the church but yeah I see your getting at Rian Johnson.
Train Dreams
I heard about this movie on TikTok, seemed interesting but when I sat down to watch it had this thought I should be catching up on something else. Anyway that though did not last long, this is a beautiful movie about the life of a logger in the pacific north west. Good things happen, bad things happen and you kind of just live in it, see it, your just seeing someone’s life. Its almost like a movie version of a Ken burns documentary. The movie is stunning and Joel Eggertons performance is great but yeah its hard to be too specific about it. Not for everyone but if your looking for something a bit more contemplative, quiet something where your not suspeding your disbelief Train Dreams might be for you.
Thunderbolts
Best Marvel movie of the year for me and of of my favs of the year in general was Thunderbolts. While Captain America Brave new world was a bit all over the place and Fantastic 4 First steps while good did not have all the juice for me. Thunderbolts ends up hearkening back to the older MCU movies being a generally solid movie that happens to take place in the MCU. Above all its much like Superman is fairly earnest. Not exactly save the world through the power of friendship but not that far off as well.
KPOP Demon Hunters
It’s a kids movie there Is nothing super sup ring about it. But the visuals are great, love the HuntrX characters and the music is amazing. Definitely the songs of the summer for 2025. Also low key I think K-POP Demon Hunters 2 is going to be the thing that changes Netflix attitude to the theatrical releases.
Avatar Fire and ash
Had some pretty high hopes for this especially after how good the way of water was and while pretty good its definitely a slight step down from the way of water. It still has the amazing visuals, Pandora is a really cool world etc etc. But this movie is subtitled Fire and Ash and there is perhaps not as much Fire and Ash. Don’t get me wrong Varang and the Mangkwan are pretty cool and interesting addition to the the franchise but yeah maybe we needed a bit more backstory on them. Anyway id probably view this as more a sequel to the way of water but its still good just not as good as the way of water.
Bugonia
Don’t want to say too much for spoilers but yeah if the trailer interests you definitely worth a watch.
Mission Impossible Final Reckoning
The supposed end of the MI franchise, it ends up being good on par with dead reckoning but not quite as good as my favorite Rogue Nation. Set pieces are good and there are some surprising throw backs. Its long but the tempo is pretty decent, though it does indulge itself a bit (which slightly earned) as the supposed last movie but yeah overall good.
Chainsaw Man REZE Arc
If you like chainsaw man you will probably like this movie, if not this isn’t really that different. If your new this is probably not the place to start. My only issue is that this being a movie, certain characters are sidelined.
Other Notable
House of Dynamite - This is the movie split into 3 parts and the first part is incredible, the 2nd is fine and the third is ok. If your after more its about a scenario in which a nuke is fired at the US and all the things that unfold. I guess its similar to a rashamon but I’m not sure if the different perspectives ad a ton to the movie. Again the first sequence is amazing but ill be honest if you wanna watch that call it and treat it like a short film its probably a better experience.
Predator Badlands - Its good fun
Mickey 17 - not what I was expecting out of BJH but still decent
Fantastic 4 First Steps - I liked it for the most part but how the F4 handled certain things was a bit questionable.
Ballerina - Its fine but a bit of a step down from the John Wick movies. There is one sequence at the end I thought was fun but
